Each port had a cadre of professional Pilots, familiar with the nuances of the location, who took over the command of ships as they sailed toward the harbor. They struck their sails, and employed large rowboats with gangs of rowers as “tugs” to help them navigate tight quarters.

the same way as the boats now do….however they have computers now

The Sea Cadet Corp(UK) has in its offshore fleet 2 Yachts and 1 Tall Ship… You’re taught to sail into harbor and docks under sail and not power (even though its there if you need it)….it would have been easier to control your speed on the olden ships….and with years of practice you would be able to master the skill needed….in the age of modern technology and engines we are all just getting lazy (says me with my powerboating level 2 and safetyboat)
